Chapter 12

Colby

He was still slightly out of sorts about the other night with Christine. He hated how he took things. Yes, he'd been working on trying not to overreact or think of worst-case scenarios with the people closest to him, but he still struggled at times. The only saving grace was that she proved to be the damn angel he always thought she was and let him slide like nothing ever happened. He wished he could let himself slide as well.

He had to push aside beating himself up and focus on the next game. This was the first time he would play against his brother in the NHL. He was looking forward to playing against Dez and being able to check up on him again.

Of course, the moment they ran into each other, Dez started the day with a bit of a mind game. The most infuriating thing about the game was that Dez ended his shutout streak. Colby knew Dez had told his linemates to shoot glove-high, knowing that was Colby’s one weakness.

At least his team had his back. When Dez got into his face and tried to thank him for letting the puck through, Petey put a quick end to that. Petey wasn't one to get into fights often, but he was a firm believer in the hockey code. At least, it never elevated to a full fight. But from then on out, they kept Dez away from his net, just in case. That didn't stop Dez's line from scoring on him a second time.

After the second Wild goal, he pushed his mask up and then grabbed his water bottle. He squirted some into his mouth and then into the air. He let his eyes follow the path of the droplets. He needed to get his mind straight again. Before the droplets fell onto the ice, Scotty skated up to him and said, "It's alright, Smithy. We got you."

Colby nodded in acknowledgement of Scotty's words, but his eyes were still focused on the water. He pulled the mask down and shook his head before getting set. As soon as he was down in his crouch, the puck was dropped to reset the game.

Thankfully, after that second goal, he stopped letting goals in. He did his part to try and win after a shaky start. It helped that Petey and Rico made sure he didn't get screened as much when Dez was on the ice, and they swapped out the lines, so their top line was against Dez's lines. It also helped to have Scotty boxing out Dez and Lager screening Dez's friend. The only bad thing was that the Sound never really got their offense fully going.

As they came off the ice, Colby was determined to put the game behind him. Of course, he got tapped for the post-game interview. But he didn't think there would be a way out of it. Dez and the Wild made too much talk about trying to beat him in this game.

All he wanted to do was put the game behind him and hang out with his brother until curfew.
